PowerShell script: Set customized server settings on Azure Windows VMs running Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019 or Windows Server 2022

In this blog post I will show you how you can set customized server settings on Azure Windows VMs running Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019 or Windows Server 2022.

First of all, to automate and speed up the server customization process, but also to reduce errors and to ensure consistency by eliminating the need for repetitive configuration changes and performance tweaks.

The below PowerShell script will do all of the following:

  • Check if the PowerShell window is running as Administrator (when not running from Cloud Shell), otherwise the Azure PowerShell script will be exited.
  • Allow ICMP (ping) through Windows Firewall for IPv4 and IPv6.
  • Enable Remote Desktop (RDP) and enable Windows Firewall rule.
  • Enable secure RDP authentication Network Level Authentication (NLA).
  • Enable Remote Management (for RSAT tools and Windows Admin Center) and enable Windows Firewall rules.
  • Enable User Account Control (UAC).
  • Disable RDP printer mapping.
  • Disable IE security for Administrators.
  • Disable Windows Admin Center pop-up.
  • Disable Server Manager at logon.
  • Disable guest account.
  • Disable Hibernation.
  • Set Windows Diagnostic level (Telemetry) to Security (no Windows diagnostic data will be sent).
  • Set Folder Options.
  • Set volume label of C: to OS.
  • Set Time Zone (UTC+01:00).
  • Set Power Management to High Performance, if it is not currently the active plan.
  • Set the Interactive Login to “Do not display the last username”.
  • Set language to En-US and keyboard to Belgian (Period).
  • Create the C:\Temp folder, if it does not exist.
  • Remove description of the Local Administrator Account.
  • Restart the server to apply all changes, five seconds after running the last command.

To use the script copy and save it as Set-Customized-Server-Settings-Azure-IaaS-Windows-Server-2016-2019-2022.ps1 or download it from GitHub. First adjust all changeable variables, if required to your use. Then copy and run the customized script with Administrator privileges from Windows PowerShell on the Azure IaaS Windows VM you want to customize. Or you can use Azure Bastion (native client), the custom script extension, the run command or Azure Desired State Configuration (DSC), to run the script. Just use whatever feature or service you prefer. Also, keep in mind that when all customizations are set, it will reboot the server(s).

Prerequisites

  • An Azure subscription.
  • An Azure IaaS Windows VM running Windows Server 2016, 2019 or 2022
  • Administrator privileges on the IaaS VM where you want to run the script.
  • Change all the changeable variables in the script where needed to fit your needs. The variables you need to check: $allowIcmpV4FirewallRuleName, $allowIcmpV4FirewallRuleDisplayName, $allowIcmpV6FirewallRuleName, $allowIcmpV6FirewallRuleDisplayName, $cDriveLabel, $timezone, $keyboardInputMethod, $tempFolder
